Project Description

The New Room, Bristol

KB2 were appointed to provide the structural design for a new three storey building in the courtyard of The New Room (John Wesley’s Chapel), an historic 276-year-old Grade I Listed building, known as “the cradle of Methodism”. The New Room was awarded a grant of £2.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Designed by Purcell, the new building features a shop, cafe, multi-media lecture and education room, a library, archive rooms and offices. The existing museum was remodelled but the interior of the chapel, an architectural gem, was preserved.

The site was confined, complex and historically sensitive and we are delighted to have been part of the team on such an important project.

The new three storey building is a steel frame with metal deck and concrete floors.  The frame is supported on a grillage of reinforced concrete ground beams which span between CFA piles extending 15m to the Redcliffe sandstone.
