The Heart Project, Falmouth University
KB2 provided civil and structural engineering services for Falmouth University’s Heart Project. The Heart is the first space that visitors encounter when they arrive at the Penryn Campus and the project aimed to improve the visitor experience by creating a striking gateway building that signifies arrival at the Campus, also housing a new reception and shop. The broader landscape includes a contemporary garden, sculpture in the landscape, a sundial piazza, a relaxation area with views across the Campus, stepped and terraced seating, and patterned paving.
The structural design of the single storey building incorporates piled foundations and precast concrete ground floor slab, and the superstructure is a combination of steel frame and loadbearing masonry.
Civil works included the construction of the below ground drainage and sub/base associated with the landscaping and below ground drainage associated with the building.
