Project Architect GVA Grimley LLP required a disused single
storey former bus depot located on the site of Maindy Barracks,
Cardiff and built in the early 1900’s to be converted for the use
of The Reserve Forces and Cadets Association for Wales.
The work required the insertion of a first floor structure and the
upgrading of the roof structure to carry the new roof finishes and
insulation.
The walls, roof structure and the foundations to the original building were inspected for structural defects and recommendations given for a sensitive repair and strengthening to the fabric so as to maintain its historical appearance.
The ground conditions were not particularly favourable and the existing building was seen to be founded above the level of competent strata. A new and independent internal steel structure with composite steel beams and metal decking was therefore erected on pad foundations taken down to bear on the clay.
